Mysteries of the Bible: Prophets [VHS]

Mysteries of the Bible: Prophets [VHS] Review

I purchased this video for my adult women's Sunday School Class. It served as a great way for them to get an overall view of The Prophets. It does not deal much with the Minor Prophets, but does cover most of the major prophets very nicely. The scenes shown in Jerusalem were very nicely worked in with paintings of the old Masters. There were comments from Theologians (both Jewish and Christian) about the lives of the prophets, their calling, their ministries. The scripture references were wonderful additions to the film, and the scene of Elijah being taken up in the chariot and throwing his mantel to Elisha was wonderfully moving. The music fit in very well also. The only problem I had with the video is a statement made by one of the Jewish Theologians who commented that Christ was not the Messiah spoken of by Isaiah, however my class understood the reasoning concerning such a statement from the perspective of Judiasm. Overall I felt the film was very helpful as a visual discussion starter as we began our study of the prophets. Delve deep into the origins and enigmas of the scriptures with this groundbreaking program from the acclaimed MYSTERIES OF THE BIBLE;. They stand among the Old Testament's most commanding and confounding figures: the prophets, men consumed by visions and prophecies said to have come directly from God. Their names and stories have resounded through the ages. The ecstatic voice of Elijah. The apocalyptic messages of Ezekiel and Daniel. Jeremiah's haunting vision of the fall of the Holy Temple. Did these legendary figures exist, and what was the cause and meaning of their proclaimed divine possession? From Amos and Hosea to Isiah, meet the Bible's most legendary prophets, witness their spiritual awakening, and see what became of their immutable prophecies of rapture and wrath!

McHale's Navy - Season Two

McHale's Navy - Season Two Review

McHale and his crew are at it again in season 2. The first two episodes start off with a bang. Binghamton captures Mchale's Japanese POW/cook Fuji thinking he's a spy. McHale comes up with a plan to convince Binghamton the war is over in order to rescue Fuji. In the second one, McHale and his crew are overheard by Capt Binghamton plotting to kill a noisy bird that's been driving them nuts - only Binghamton thinks they are plotting to kill HIM. The antics of the PT-73 crew go on and on and so do the laughs. This has always been one of my favorite sitcoms and season 2 is great for the low price.

McHale's Navy - Season Two Feature

  • ISBN13: 0826663105742
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.
The ever-popular Ernest Borgnine, one of the all-time great "regular guy" stars, anchored McHale's Navy, a cheerful, rambunctious '60s sitcom set in the South Pacific during World War II. By its second season, the show had perfected its formula (a formula already lifted wholesale from The Phil Silvers Show): Lt. Commander McHale (Borgnine) and the scrappy crew of his PT boat (including Tim Conway, later of The Carol Burnett Show, as bumbling Ensign Parker and Gavin MacLeod, later to helm The Love Boat, as seaman "Happy" Haines) scheme, swindle, and romance their way through the war, avoiding the enemy whenever possible, and making life miserable for their petty, tyrannical commanding officer, Capt. Binghamton (Joe Flynn, later to appear in numerous Disney live-action movies like The Love Bug and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes). Though some episodes reflected real world issues of the 1960s (for example, Ensign Parker feels less of a man when a pretty nurse turns out to be better than him at pretty much everything), by and large the show existed in a bubble of slapstick and classic vaudeville schtick--and the show's fans wouldn't want it any other way. Despite the backdrop of WWII, McHale's Navy aimed young. McHale and his crew are basically a gang of rascally kids getting away with pranks and defying the adult authority figures around them. Though the guys routinely pursue nurses, their "dates" amount to little more than stolen kisses and light petting--compared to the leering Hogan's Heroes, McHale's Navy is strangely prepubescent. Of course, this innocence is much of the show's charm, and makes the occasional Asian and Pacific Islander stereotypes a little easier to take (though it's worth noting that the Japanese characters on the show were always played by Japanese actors, something not common at the time). In addition to the original 36 episodes aired in 1963-64, McHale's Navy: Season Two features brief interviews with Borgnine and Conway (regrettably, Flynn died in 1974). The fairly bland Borgnine interview has at least one good anecdote, but the Conway interview is charming throughout. --Bret Fetzer From 1962 to 1966, McHale s Navy was a must see staple of ABC television. Still stationed on their naval base on the tiny island of Taratupa during World War II, Lt. Cdr. Quinton McHale,Ernest Borgnine, Ensign Parker,Tim Conway, and the rest of the scheming crew of PT73 are back in Season 2 with 36 all new hilarious adventures from the Pacific!

The Puppetoon Movie

The Puppetoon Movie Review

Indeed, what IS that fumigating the atmosphere,as the scarecrow wondered aloud in "Jaspar and the Haunted House"? Well it is pioneer animator/puppeteer George Pal.Arnold Leibovit has packaged and presents a myriad of cartoon shorts from George Pals'prolific era of output for our enjoyment.
George Pal,born Gyorgy Pal Marczincsák in Hungary, was 20 years old when he graduated from the Budapest Acadamy of Arts with a degree in Architecture. He was a very fine drawer and moved into the area of films where he drew lobby posters and embellished film titles.Gradually he learned the art of film animation. In the early 30s he worked for the famed German company UFA where he became head of their cartoon department and where he would finally delve into the world of stop motion animation. His work and repuation got him a job in Holland where he honed his skills doing film commercials for Phillips radio. He would utilize in his shorts top name talents such as British bands led by Henry Hall,Ambrose and Jack Hylton.
With the war looming Pal decided to move with his new born son to the States where his work got him a job with Paramount pictures. He would return back to Holland once more to retrieve his wife and then permanently return to the U.S. where he sealed his legendary reputation in stop motion animation.Instead of using just one puppet many times in different poses,he would create many different expressions that he would interchange for each emotion he wanted to project.
Pal and his fine crew, which would include for a time King Kong creator Willis O'Brien and the man he in turn influenced Ray Harryhausen(he worked on Pal's first 12 shorts),made upwards of 40 films. The only reason Pal stopped was to go into feature films where he created some memorable ones, such as "War of the Worlds" and "The Time Machine".
The first presentation on the DVD is "The Puppetoon Movie" that Leibovit wrote and produced some years ago, which comes in around 80 minutes. You can view the movie in toto or view each puppetoon in the movie seperately. The second segment of this DVD includes more puppetoon shorts, some from the movie which didn't have all the credits included and other different ones.My favourite Pal puppetoons have always been(and always will be)those starring Jaspar. There are only four included here and I hope that more can be released later. As an aside,a recent auction on Oct.9/09 at [...] of over 100 original Jaspar puppets along with the scarecrow, fetched a cool ,000!Pal paraphenalia is certainly hot stuff! Also I must tell you that there is a clipping of the dialogue in "Jaspar and the Haunted House".Right at the start where the scarecrow says"What's dat fumigatin' de atmosphere?",blackbirds' response is not heard due to a glitch in the source film soundtrack. This is disappointing. In case you're wondering, what he is supposed to say is "Yeah, what's that smellin' up the landscape?".
There is also an interview with one of Pal's animators Bob Baker, the theatrical trailer for the movie and a production photo gallery.
All in all this DVD is a very welcome release and an historical treasure of stop motion animation by one of its' legendary exponents. The shorts range in dates from the the late 30s to the late 40s,and everywhere in between. They have been culled from various film depositories in the U.S. and in Europe.Their conditions vary but all things considered they look and sound pretty good. This release certainly whets ones' appetite for more and it is hoped by this reviewer that that is indeed what transpires in the near future. But for now I advise you to get your copy while the gettings good. Enter a world of animated movie magic from eight time Academy Award winner George Pal. Hosted by Gumby, Pokey, and new pal "Arnie the Dinosaur," "The Puppetoon Movie" features classic characters like "Tubby the Tuba," "Jasper in a Jam," and "Speedy Alka-Seltzer." With hip jazz tunes from Charlie Barnet and Louis Armstrong, and as many as 5,000 individually carved puppets per short, "The Puppetoon Movie" will astound and delight children and film buffs of all ages!

Break a Leg

Break a Leg Review

I saw BREAK A LEG at a film festival a couple years ago and was pleasantly surprised. First off, John Cassini is one of those actor's actors who has been in everything but you probably wouldn't recognize him if he were to punch you in the nose. At any rate, he does an excellent job at keeping the reins in on his character, where I think a lot of other actors would start chewing up the scenery and blow it. Cassini does anything but that and provides a very compelling and beguiling anti-hero. The dialogue is crisp, the story tight and director Monika Mitchell maintains that delicate balance between the sardonic and the satirical that is so hard to do to pay off a black comedy like this one. A real indie gem and a must-see for actors. I wish there were more like it out there.

Face of Evil

Face of Evil Review

"Face of Evil" is an engaging thriller that showcases the talent of Tracey Gold, who portrays a seriously disturbed amoral young woman who will do anything to get what she wants, at the expense of others' lives. Gold plays Darcy Palmer, a young woman engaged to be married to a reformed drunk [whom she has been dating for six months]. On the eve of her wedding, Darcy flees, taking with her her precious art pieces, and a very expensive diamond ring. At the airport, Darcy realises she doesn't have enough money to get to NY and targets a young woman, killing her in a ruthless manner just so she can get some money and assumes the girl's identity, taking the girl's student position at a prestigious private college. Darcy also meets Jeanelle Polk [Shawnee Smith] her rather shy roommate who is also very wealthy. Soon enough, Darcy targets Jeanelle's wealthy dad, Russell [Perry King] who finds himself slowly attracted to Darcy and promptly seduces him.

The movie may not tread any new waters here but the strong performances by the cast elevate it above an average thriller. Gold is utterly credible as the mercenary and ruthless psychopath. King and Smith deliver credible performances as well. The pacing of the plot is well-done, engaging the viewer's attention and keeping one on tenterhooks throughout the movie. I'd recommend this to those who like suspenseful thrillers.

Tango World Championship (Mundial) 2008

Tango World Championship (Mundial) 2008 Review

I have bought this DVD too and I can say the previous reviewer is indeed a little bit exaggerated.

It is not an over-the-top extremely professional production, it is indeed a private production, but realistically you wouldn't expect to see miracles for such a low price! Most other Tango DVDs on Amazon.com cost between and , which makes this DVD great value for money.

The content is wonderful, and most of the dancers are incredible! However, any tango dancer or enthusiast knows that not all dancers can dance properly to a musical beat, and especially at this kind of competition the choreography will vary along with the music. This has nothing to do with the filming or the cameraperson; the previous reviewer seems not to know that! Also, the picture and sound quality are fine on my TV. In any case, there is a trailer on YouTube for us to see what it's like before we buy it!

I don't remember reading anywhere that this is an official production, but in any case this seems to be the only DVD of the 2008 Tango Mundial available, so I'm grateful to the producers for releasing it, so we can get a chance to see the cream of Argentine Tango in action! The Tango dancefloor comes to your screen for the third year in a row, now for the first time ever in widescreen!
The best amateur and professional dancers from around the world gathered again this year in Buenos Aires, Argentina, all with one goal in mind: to become the next World Champions in Argentine Tango.
This DVD will take you through the choreographies of the best dancers in this Championship of Tango Escenario (Stage Tango), culminating with the countdown of the top five couples, from the fifth up to the number one couple who reached the top and were named World Champions 2008!
Look for the trailer on YouTube to get an idea of what to expect!
There are also extra features, including: - The Closing Act, a final demonstration of dancers from the National University Institute of Art with the World Champions joining in at the end! - A performance by Mariano Mores and his orchestra - Our yearly 'Bloopers show', which includes various mishaps that occured during the course of the Championship proceedings, little happenings to spice things up a bit! This DVD is region-free, and subtitled in English where necessary, and comes in a standard hard DVD case with an inlay cover.

WAGNER: The Best of Overtures & Preludes - Acoustic Reality Experience [7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Disc] [Blu-ray]

WAGNER: The Best of Overtures & Preludes - Acoustic Reality Experience [7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Disc] [Blu-ray] Review

I purchased the "Twightlight of the Gods" Cd (Apocalypse Now Helicopters on the cover-Orchestra and Conductor unidentified), so there is some basis for comparison. Had Richard Wagner listened to Twighlight of the Gods he would have thrown up, his systems would have been overcome. Questionable playing destroys even the best music. I mention this as a basis to compare The Chicago Sympony Orchestra on Richard Wagner, Overtures and Preludes. Without saying that somewhere it has been done better, it is difficult to imagine a rendition of this music more accurately in tune with what Wagner must have intended. There is a subtlety and scope to this recording, a beauty and breadth that makes one believe that you are looking through the mind of the composer. This is other than to say you would be unable to argue with tempo here or style there or other acquired tastes. Richard Wagner, for all his personal flaws, was one of the best composers. Use of Orchestra, imagination, emotion, melody and use of melody, etc. etc., existed in the mind of this man as in few others. Noy to mention the crystal clarity og this recording superbly conducted by Caetani, Orchestra give perfect playing and to this novice re Wagner do full justice to this great music. THIS DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO DISC DELIVERS AN AMAZING ACOUSTIC REALITY EXPERIENCE THROUGH ANY BLU-RAY (PS3) PLAYER WITH AN HDMI 1.3 OR OPTICAL (core only 5.1 and 6.1) OUTPUT CONNECTED OR ASSEMBLED WITH DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO OR DTS (core only 5.1 and 6.1) CAPABLE RECEIVER THE FULL RANGE 7.1 (6.1;5.1) SURROUND SPEAKER SET-UP IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR FULL PERCEPTION OF ACOUSTIC REALITY AND LOW FREQUENCY CHANNEL (LFE) THAT IS VERY CRITICAL FOR THIS RECORD.
